Kitten Flood and Feline Panleukopenia Outbreak on Fuerteventura
Meow dear Catlovers,
We are currently facing an extremely challenging situation on Fuerteventura. The number of kittens in need of help is overwhelming, and at the same time, an outbreak of feline panleukopenia (feline distemper) is putting countless cats at risk.
This highly contagious virus is not only affecting vulnerable kittens but has also been detected in adult, neutered cats. As a result, we are carrying out targeted testing to identify infections as quickly as possible and prevent further spread. These tests are essential but create significant additional costs at a time when our resources are already stretched to the limit.
At the same time, our team continues to care for a large number of rescued cats and kittens. Stories like Estrella’s remind us why this work matters. Estrella arrived in our care with her six newborn kittens. During a routine veterinary examination, a painful and deeply embedded palm tree splinter was discovered in her hind leg. Despite her suffering, she never stopped caring for her babies. Thankfully, the splinter was successfully removed, and she is now recovering well while continuing to raise her kittens.
Cases like hers show how much hidden suffering many animals endure before receiving help.
With the growing number of kittens, the ongoing medical treatments, vaccinations, food supplies, and the urgent need for panleukopenia testing, we urgently rely on donations to continue our work.
Every contribution helps us provide medical care, protect vulnerable cats from disease, and give them the chance of a safe and healthy future.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your compassion, your trust, and your continued support of the cats of Fuerteventura.
Together, we can make a difference.
