Meow dear Catlovers,
Serious Incidents in La Lajita – Why We Also Share the Difficult Realities
In early February 2026, five cats from an officially registered and protected colony in La Lajita, in the south of Fuerteventura, were found dead within just a few days. All of them had recently been sterilized, microchipped, and officially registered according to municipal protocols.
There is strong suspicion that poison may have been deliberately placed in the area.
The incidents were immediately reported to the local police, the Guardia Civil, and the municipality of Pájara. A formal complaint has been filed, and the cats were taken for veterinary examination to determine the exact cause of death. The specialized nature protection unit (SEPRONA) and the environmental department of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura are now involved in the investigation.
If poison was used, this is not only an attack on protected animals — it poses a potential danger to dogs, wildlife, and even children.
As an association, we usually share the positive stories: rescues, recoveries, adoptions, and progress. But we also believe it is important to speak openly about the shadows and the challenges we face on the ground. Animal welfare work is not only heartwarming — it can also be painful, exhausting, and at times deeply upsetting.
Situations like this remind us why our work matters. We remain committed to seeking clarity, working with the authorities, and protecting the animals entrusted to our care.
Thank you for standing with us — in the good moments, and in the difficult ones as well.
