This is Buzz who was surrendered to us almost 3 years ago now. Unfortunately Buzz has severe allergies to dust and so many other things. He is permanently on medication which does really help but he has been struggling with his eyes recently. Just when we finally managed to make one eye better, the other eye as you can see has become sore. Of course we immediately took him to the vets and in the same way allergies were affecting his other eye, they are now affecting this one. So more drops, creams for sweet Buzz until it gets better. We are grateful to every single person who is joining our group. Every euro really does help us care for dogs like Buzz. Thank you!

Please keep Cookie in your thoughts as he is not so well this week

Yesterday afternoon we noticed his eye was very weepy and he wasn't opening it fully. We immediately spoke to the vets and took him this morning. It appears Cookie has an ulcer behind his eye which will, fingers crossed, go away with the correct treatment. One of the treatments needs administering every hour which is almost impossible for us to do at the shelter so we made the decision for Cookie to stay at the vets for the next couple of days.

Cookie has also lost 900 gram since the 2nd May which may not seem like much but for Cookie every gram is so important. After various tests, it shows he is anemic again, his kidneys are good but we are still waiting for full readings from the vet which will detail what's going on with leishmaniosis.

Come on Cookie, this is just a small blip right? We will get back you back to sprinting round the shelter and playing with your friends

This is Atari. A few months ago he was found in the area local to the shelter. Apparently he escaped from his 'owners' but when we contacted them they didn't want him back.......abandonment is a huge problem in Portugal. It is a crime yet when reported nothing happens..... and if it ever does, it is years before a case gets to court. Back to Atari. We have been waiting for a space to come up at the shelter and in the meantime a neighbour local to the shelter has been feeding Atari. We provide the food and have sterilised him, updated his vaccines and had him tested for any illnesses - he is healthy! This is another way your teaming one euro is helping. Not all dogs we help are physically at the shelter. We now have a space available at the shelter so are in talks with the neighbour to see whether Atari will come to us or the neighbour will continue to care for him with our support. We will keep you updated. Thank you for your support!

Thank you to everyone who has joined Benafim Dogs Teaming group. You are helping dogs like Chilli. This is how Chilli was kept before he was rescued. He lived life on a very short chain with this bench as shelter from all weathers. Chilli has been with us for several years now and when he came to us we had his bloods and urine tested (as well as chipping him, vaccinating him and sterilising him). Unfortunately Chilli tested positive for leishmaniosis and requires continue medical care from us. Leishmaniosis does not go away, it can't be cured but with the right medication and diet it can be managed and dogs live a long and happy life. Just this week we took Chilli to the vets and had his bloods and urine tested again. The super good news is that Chilli's leishmaniosis is under control and at the lowest level before it can become dormant. The not so good news is that his kidneys were damaged prior to him coming to us because he wasn't cared for and his leishmaniosis was not detected. We give Chilli medication daily for his kidneys and special food to help. This is how you are helping Chilli, by supporting the work we do to provide the vital care needed for dogs like Chilli until we can find them their forever homes.

An absolute pleasure to be able to help, one euro a month seems such a small amount. How can I make it more? Kate Oldershaw

Cookie is one of the dogs you being a member will help. Cookie was rescued in the Autumn of 2022 - so weak, unable to stand and incredibly ill. We really had no idea if he would survive. Cookie weighed just 11kg when he came to Benafim dogs, he had to have two blood transfusions and is still on many different medications 3 times a day. Cookie also needs special food for his liver and kidneys until they become healthier (which they are). Now at 16kg Cookie enjoys mixing with other dogs, and we have discovered how much he loves going out in the car.
Currently to care for Cookie it costs us a minimum of 250 euros per month. You becoming member will help us continue to give Cookie the care he deserves until we can find him a loving home. Thank you !!

Benafim Dogs is ALL about the dogs. Our commitment to each and every one of them at all times is to show respect, love, kindness and to ensure their health needs, both physical and psychological are met on a daily basis.

No dog is overlooked -every dog deserves to be seen and to be heard; every dog deserves a home. Until this happens, we do the very best we can to ensure their quality of life is as good as it can be during their time with us. This includes daily exercise, regular trips into the local town to socialise them and an abundance of our time caring for and loving them.

Every dog in our care is vaccinated, chipped, sterilised, receives regular worm, tick, flea and sandfly prevention treatment. All of our dogs are regularly checked by us and will always receive the veterinary care they need.

Your funds will be used to continue to pay our vet bills, provide our dogs with food (sometimes special food for allergies/health conditions) and ongoing upkeep to the kennels.
