Nearly 12 years of war in Syria have left a country devastated, and worse, millions of lives destroyed. But now a devastating earthquake of magnitude 7.6 hits the northwest of the country and the southeast of Turkey on February 6, leaving more than 4,000 lives in both countries. From the Islamic Relief Foundation we are on the ground providing cash grants so that those most affected can meet their immediate needs.

Islamic Relief has historically had a vision: “Inspired and guided by our values, we envision a caring world where communities are strengthened, social obligations are met, and people respond together to the suffering of others.” On February 6, 2023, a devastating earthquake struck southeastern Turkey and northwestern Syria, an area already affected by more than a decade of conflict. In Syria, more than 4,500 people were killed and over 10,000 were injured. The earthquake exacerbated the suffering of more than 2.7 million internally displaced people in the region. Our teams on the ground have begun a massive housing reconstruction project for 999 affected families (more than 4,300 people). Since then, you have supported the completion of 145 homes with your donations. Each house houses a family of five and is theirs for life. Permanent homes are 65 square meters each.

Hola teamers!
Hoy quiero presentaros a Salma (seudónimo para preservar su identidad). Salma es una joven Siria que perdió su pierna derecha a causa de la guerra en Siria y ha estado mucho tiempo intentando lidiar día a día en un pueblo donde la accesibilidad es prácticamente nula. Hoy, han podido implantarle una prótesis adaptada a sus necesidades en el Centro de Prótesis de Islamic Relief en Siria. Varias veces por semana acude al centro a hacer fisioterapia para fortalecer músculos y articulaciones, y mejorar su movilidad para adaptarse a su nueva prótesis. También recibe apoyo psicológico a través de sesiones de terapia y grupos de apoyo, junto con otros pacientes. Salma sabe que nunca más recuperará su pierna, pero sonríe tímida dando las gracias a todas las personas que hicieron posible mejorar su calidad de vida.
